Welcome to the Bedfordshire AAA Web Site
Whilst the Bedfordshire 10K has been cancelled as a physical race for this year we organised and formally licenced a virtual race.
THE RESULTS ARE NOW ON ROAD RACING
CORONAVIRUS – COVID 19 UPDATE 27TH JULY
Most of the previous update is still valid.
Note that locally Luton is now in a degree of local lockdown with no leisure facilities re-opened on 25th July. Although less locked down, a similar approach has been taken in Bedford.
Sandy track is re-opening but cautiously and initially only for Biggleswade AC members.
Until we are clearer on when we may have a track available for competition we are unable to confirm when the Bedfordshire Open may go ahead but it is unlikely to be before September.
Also the SEAA have cancelled all their events BUT are putting on an Open on 27th/28th August. Entries open online on 1st August.
The Gateshead Grand Prix has also been cancelled in September.
As usual the government announced a reduction in lockdowns last week, including the re-opening of leisure centres at two days’ notice, which also means that nobody is able to respond in that timeframe!
Generally, most track operators are being very cautious around Health and Safety and Covid-19 implications. Also the facilities will need to be prepared for Covid-19 compliance and also some maintenance work done e.g. just cutting the grass. There are also the commercial aspects of staff returning from Furlough. Finally as you will know things will not be as they were
There are also plans around a return to competition. In theory these could recommence from early August with the licensing portal due to open on 25th July. There are some test events taking place this week to try out the guidelines that England athletics have devised. This is very important to see how practical some of the plans are. Currently every high jump will require the bed to be wiped down afterwards and this will lengthen competition times.
The intention generally is to have some inter-club competition in August, assuming tracks are generally opened because no Bedfordshire ones are open for competition at the moment.
The county has decided the County champs don’t make sense but we are hoping to put on the Bedfordshire Open, probably in September and it will likely be a Run Fest, Throws Fest and Jumps Fest approach.
We will review the multi-page government guidance from last week and the England guidance hopefully available at the end of this week before firming up the plans we have made.
However even normal safety protocols in throwing events will change as unless the official has a personal warning horn, we definitely won’t be sharing one!
We are also likely to use EDM to reduce having people with a tape but it will be limited to one operator. Numbers will be collected but not handed out and we probably won’t have club houses open.
Also the desire will be to NOT have spectators at the tracks but obviously we need to make sure that children are safeguarded. Finally there may be a reticence to issue equipment and starting blocks.
For those that have watched some of the weird and wonderful approaches to athletics on TV, I can assure you that all the Bedfordshire tracks 200M start lines ARE in the correct place
Road Racing is also still an issue with mass starts being a problem. Some races are looking at Wave starts on dis-used airfields (plenty of space for >2M overtaking) but this would still be on time and if you set the fastest off first then it will be a long time before the final runners are in. The Cross country season is also still under discussion.

CORONAVIRUS – COVID 19 UPDATE 14th JUNE
All the East of England Competitions have now been cancelled i.e. Individual, Hibbard/Bemax/Peterhourse Trophies and the combined
Also the SAL/EYAL/EAL and YD leagues have been cancelled
The current England strategy for competition is that any restart from around the middle of July would be for local intra-club matches and Opens. In Bedfordshire we would look to schedule the county champs and the Open potentially over several dates and with a focus on Track, jumps and throws at each individual meeting.
Training can now happen in socially distanced groups of six according to government guidance but many tracks as they re-open are likely to have individual protocols. With the furlough rules relaxing in July to allow part time work it may make some level of re-opening more financially viable for tracks
Finally the ban on road races has been extended until the end of July and will continue to be reviewed
CORONAVIRUS – COVID 19 UPDATE 22nd MAY
The Anniversary Games have been cancelled
We have decided to cancel the Bedfordshire 10K for this year.

We are still planning on having a cross country season and the county champs are scheduled for 9th January 2021 at Campbell Park
